Why care pays off
The most common cause of a premature blind defect is not wear but dirt. Leaves lying in the housing trap moisture and corrode the winding shaft. Pollen and dust in the guide rail increase friction until the motor is overloaded. Bird droppings eat into the awning fabric's impregnation. None of this is dramatic as long as it is removed early.
A well-cared-for slat blind easily reaches 25 to 30 years; a neglected one rarely more than 15. With a new system starting at CHF 1'200.– per window, that is a noticeable difference. Care is therefore the cheapest insurance against replacement costs there is.
What you can do yourself
A large part of the care is simple and needs no tools. The basic rule matters: never use a pressure washer, no solvents or scouring agents, and only extend fabric awnings when dry. With lukewarm water, a little ph-neutral soap and a soft brush you get surprisingly far.
- 01Wipe slats and external venetian curtains with a soft cloth and mild soapy water once or twice a year.
- 02Clear guide rails of leaves and dust with a dry brush or vacuum, then treat with silicone spray only if needed.
- 03Brush awning fabric in dry weather; dissolve bird droppings and tree resin promptly with lukewarm water, never let them dry in.
- 04Always retract awnings dry; if retracted wet, fully extend and dry the fabric at the next opportunity to avoid mildew stains.
- 05Visual check: once a year look for torn straps, frayed tapes, loose screws and rust spots.
What the specialist handles
As soon as it involves the drive, working at height or the load-bearing mechanics, DIY ends. Motors, winding shafts, spring tension on folding-arm awnings and end-position settings belong in expert hands: the spring force of a folding arm can be considerable, and ladder work at the window lintel carries a real fall risk.
Professional maintenance includes lubricating moving parts, retightening the brackets, checking the motor and radio receiver, readjusting the end positions and testing the wind and sun automation. Depending on system type and number of windows, such a service round typically costs between CHF 120.– and CHF 250.– and usually pays for itself within the first year through the consequential damage it prevents.
The seasonal checklist
Blinds need no constant attention, but a few fixed points across the year. We recommend our Zurich customers this simple rhythm, guided by weather and use:
- 01Spring: basic cleaning after winter, clear guide rails of leaves, function test of all drives before the sun season.
- 02Summer: brush the awning fabric if needed, check the wind automation, inspect for bent slats after thunderstorms.
- 03Autumn: remove leaves from housings and rails, a last thorough cleaning, retract sensitive fabric awnings.
- 04Winter: do not move exterior systems in frost to avoid icing damage; operate the blind only when needed and after full thawing.
When to call the service technician
There are warning signs where you should not wait until the next season. Unusual noises while raising and lowering, a motor that stalls or gets hot, visible rust on the winding shaft or a blind running crooked all point to a problem that worsens without intervention.
In the city of Zurich and the Limmat Valley we are usually on-site for maintenance and service within two to three working days. For property managers and larger buildings we offer maintenance contracts with an annual inspection and guaranteed response times, which is the most predictable and economical option, especially with many systems.
